UNCUT GEMS (2019) Stream on Netflix; rent on Amazon, Vudu and YouTube. The combination of Adam Sandler’s performance in an atypical role and the Safdie brothers’ energetic and adventurous style made waves when this crime thriller arrived in theaters last year. Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a jeweler and gambler who hopes that a black opal he has acquired from Ethiopia will be the key to his salvation. His plan, however, is quickly thrown into disarray by the basketball player Kevin Garnett, playing himself, who wants to borrow the gemstone for good luck. As he tries to extricate himself from one jam after another, Ratner must also contend with his estranged wife, Dinah (Idina Menzel), his mercurial mistress, Julia (Julia Fox), and his loan shark brother-in-law Arno (Eric Bogosian).

JEOPARDY! TEACHERS TOURNAMENT 7 p.m. on ABC (check local listings). This competition is one of the long-running quiz show’s most beloved installments. Teachers from around the country have the opportunity to flex their intellectual muscles outside of the classroom and enjoy a rare moment in the public eye. Fifteen contestants will duke it out for the $100,000 prize and a place in the next Tournament of Champions. The first matchup, airing tonight, features Amanda Baltimore, a seventh-grade science teacher; Peter Gouveia, a seventh-grade English teacher; and Ivory Johnson, a high school social studies teacher. Game winners and the top four runners-up will advance to the semifinal.

THE TITAN GAMES 8 p.m. on NBC. If you’re more interested in brawn than brains, this athletic competition series might be a better fit. It returns for its second season with an updated structure. The contestants will be divided into three regional brackets and they’ll compete in a series of grueling physical challenges for a chance wrest the title of “Titan” from a professional athlete. In the final rounds, the regional winners will square off against one another until only one man and one woman remain to each claim $100,000. If one of the professionals is among the winners, they will donate the prize money to a charity of their choice. Dwayne Johnson, the actor and former professional wrestler, hosts.

GRANT 9 p.m. on History. Time has a way of sorting historical figures into neatly defined categories. There are the heroes and the villains, the geniuses and the fools, the prophets and the charlatans. But some individuals are not so easily placed. Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States, was widely celebrated, at least in the north, after the Civil War for his contributions as a general of the Union army. His tenure as president, however, is most often remembered for the scandals and corruption that plagued his administration. This three part mini-series highlights Grant’s achievements and put his failures in context. It will combine narrative scenes, commentary by experts like Ron Chernow, a Grant biographer, and archival material to tell his complicated story.
