Donald Trump has come under fresh attack over his dogged refusal to concede November’s election, with former Republican speechwriter Peter Wehner branding him “essentially sociopathic” on MSNBC.

The president’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, went further, telling Vanity Fair: “He has an incredibly fragile ego and his fragile ego will not allow him to acknowledge that he is a loser, that he lost the election to Joe Biden… This is a cash grab. When you finish a job, you’re always thinking about how to reinvent yourself. That’s what Donald Trump is doing right now.”

In the latest setback to his doomed appeal, his right-wing media allies, notably Fox News and Newsmax, have been forced to drop their conspiracy theorising on his behalf after receiving a legal threat from Dominion and Smartmatic, manufacturers of voting machines, both of whom deny their devices are vulnerable to manipulation.

Trump mocks McConnell in presentation: ‘He was the first one off the ship’

The president’s pettiness knows no bounds.

Gino Spocchia has this on his inevitable grudge against the Senate majority leader for finally breaking rank to acknowledge Biden’s election win last week.

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey unfollows Donald Trump

The social media giant’s CEO would have been forgiven for growing sick of having to censor every second tweet from the president but it appears he also unfollowed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as well, apparently stepping back from the political snakepit on his platform.

Graeme Massie has this report.

House Republicans met with Trump to plot ‘last stand’

A group of Trump loyalists led by Mo Brooks of Alabama met at the White House on Monday for a series of three meetings with the president and his lawyers to discuss a last-ditch effort to challenge the election result, according to Politico.

The sessions “lasted over three hours and included roughly a dozen lawmakers”, the site says, and also saw the collective meet with vice president Mike Pence, who will preside over the joint session of Congress on 6 January when lawmakers officially certify the Electoral College votes, an event Trump is certain to object to.

Usual suspects Jim Jordan, Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar were there – tucking in to festive sausage rolls and meatballs, as was newbie Marjorie Taylor Greene, a believer in the nonsense QAnon cult.

“It was a back-and-forth concerning the planning and strategy for January the 6th,” Brooks told the site in a phone interview.

“More and more congressmen and senators are being persuaded that the election was stolen,” he said, declining to name any senators.

Fauci says US should watch new Covid strain carefully but not join UK travel ban

The good doctor has said he did not recommend the US join other countries in banning travel from the UK over the new coronavirus variant detected in southern England.

The top US infectious disease expert said American health officials should “without a doubt keep an eye on it” but added: “We don’t want to overreact.”

Dr Fauci told CNN he would advise against suspending flights from the UK should the matter come up at the news White House coronavirus task force meeting. “Follow it carefully, but don’t overreact to it,” he said of the new Covid-19 variant.

Pat Robertson tells Trump: ‘You’ve had your day and it’s time to move on’

Almost as disgusted with the president as General McCaffrey is the influential evangelical pastor and ex-Republican presidential candidate, who says Don should shut up, “move on” and stop “living in an alternate reality”.

Trump insiders express anxieties as retired general slams martial law proposal as ‘thuggery’

“No one is sure where this is heading. He’s still the president for another month,” White House advisers have fretted to CNN, expressing their concern about Trump inviting back Sidney Powell and dwelling on voting machine conspiracy theories when even Newsmax has walked away from them.

One man who is in little doubt about what’s going on is former National Security Council member and retired four-star general Barry McCaffrey, who told MSNBC last night he was “horrified” by Trump stooge Michael Flynn’s suggestion that martial law should be imposed on the swing states to “re-run” the process, dismissing the idea as “thuggery”.

For Indy Voices, Andrew Feinberg has been speaking to a few aides himself and finds them in a similarly disconcerted mood.

Bill Barr accuses Russia over cyber-attack and dismisses need for vote probe

The US attorney general, once Trump’s sword and shield against the Mueller Report, again broke with the president on Monday at a press conference on the 32nd anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing, rubbishing the idea that the recent cyber-attack suffered could have come from anywhere but Moscow and dismissing the need for a special counsel (like wacko QAnon lawyer Sidney Powell) to investigate either the election fraud myth or Hunter Biden, because the first does not exist and the latter has no case to answer.

“If I thought that a special counsel at this stage was the right tool, and was appropriate I would name one but I haven’t and I’m not going to,” Barr said.

He also said he saw “no basis now for seizing machines by the federal government” in a further blow to Trumpworld.

Senate passes $900bn virus relief package

The upper chamber of Congress yesterday followed the House of Representatives by waving through a much-delayed new economic stimulus package intended to support the nation through the pandemic, with American citizens supplied with $600 bailout cheques (welcome, no doubt, but still only half the amount paid out earlier in the year).

It now lands on the Resolute Desk for Trump’s signature.

Here’s the latest on the bill.
