Trump news live: Latest election updates as president urges suburban women to ‘like me’

US president Donald Trump speaks at campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday

Donald Trump implored suburban women to “please like me” at his latest campaign rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and continued to deride his challenger Joe Biden, saying he “cannot imagine losing to a guy like this”.

The president lied about the candidate’s intention to ban hydraulic fracturing at the expense of thousands of local jobs and wrongly congratulated members of his audiences he might have recovered from coronavirus, saying they are now “immune for life”, despite no scientific evidence existing to support the claim and multiple instances of reinfection being reported around the world.

Twitter has meanwhile once again been forced to rein in dubious pro-Trump activity, this time suspending fake accounts purporting to be black supporters of the president, typically tweeting the bogus phrase: “YES IM BLACK AND IM VOTING FOR TRUMP!!!”

Kamala Harris targets vulnerable GOP senators over Obamacare at hearing

Biden’s running mate again distinguished herself by gunning for Republicans whose seats are in danger like John Cornyn, Thom Tillis, Lindsey Graham and Joni Ernst by pointing out how an assault on the Affordable Care Act would harm their constituencies.

“Insurance companies reinstating annual and lifetime caps [would mean] more than 20m Americans losing insurance at the worst possible time, again, in the midst of a pandemic, including nearly 2m Texans, 607,000 North Carolinians, 288,000 South Carolinians, 227,000 Iowans and 4.2m Californians,” she said, speaking from the campaign trail via Zoom.

Amy Coney Barrett duels with Democrats on Obamacare, abortion and guns on Day Two of SCOTUS hearings

“I have had no conversation with the president or any of his staff on how I might rule,” Judge Barrett insisted before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, repeatedly declining to express her personal view on a range of contentious issues and insisting it was her job merely to interpret laws, not make them.

The federal appeals court judge said she was beholden to no one – not Trump, not conservative dark money, not her Catholic faith nor the late Justice Antonin Scalia, her legal mentor – but do we believe her?

If confirmed as a Supreme Court justice, she could potentially hold the position for half a century, so her view on Roe v Wade and other crucial rights issues is hardly trivial.

Her cool neutrality on whether Trump should peacefully yield power should he lose the election and contest the result was certainly cause for concern.

“It would be a dagger at the heart of the court and our democracy if this election is decided by the court instead of the voters,” was how Democrat Richard Blumenthal put it to her on Tuesday.

Griffin Connolly has this comprehensive account of the day’s key exchanges ahead of today’s resumption at 9am DC time (2pm GMT).

Biden accuses Trump of regarding senior citizens as ‘expendable’

The Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden was in Florida on Tuesday and told elderly voters that the president’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic was evidence enough that he thinks older Americans are “expendable”.

“To Donald Trump, you’re expendable. You’re forgettable. You’re virtually nobody,” Biden, 77 himself, told a socially-distanced gathering of around 50 people at a care centre in Pembroke Pines, Broward County.

His visit came as the US coronavirus death toll topped 215,000, with around seven per cent of those fatalities being recorded in Florida, where around a quarter of the population is over 60.

President retweets Bin Laden conspiracy theory attacking Obama

Since Twitter has policing Trump on its mind, it would be well advised to look at this disturbing retweet from the president via “MAGA ROD”, which pushes a completely unfounded conspiracy theory claiming that the CIA kept Islamist terror boss Osama bin Laden detained in Iran before moving him to Pakistan to become “Obama’s trophy kill”.

Twitter removes fake black Trump accounts

The social network has once again been forced to rein in dubious pro-Trump activity, this time suspending fake accounts purporting to be black supporters of the president, typically tweeting the bogus phrase: “YES IM BLACK AND IM VOTING FOR TRUMP!!!”

The Washington Post revealed Twitter’s investigation, which is seeing it root out the accounts on the basis that they are spam and engaging in platform manipulation.

A review of some of the suspended accounts indicate they often use stolen images to appear more authentic and commonly claim to be those of military or law enforcement officers.

Team Trump is desperately trying to appeal to African Americans given that just 10 per cent support him, according to the polls, hence his reliance on promoting right-wing social media personalities like Diamond and Silk, Candace Owens and Terrence K Williams and regularly, ludicrously, insisting that he has done more in office for the community than any president since Abraham Lincoln.

Trump falsely tells rally he and other coronavirus survivors are now immune

Perhaps the president’s most pernicious lie in Johnstown came when he wrongly congratulated members of his audience who might have recovered from coronavirus, declaring that they are now “immune for life”, despite no scientific evidence existing to support the claim and multiple instances of reinfection being reported around the world.

Trump appeals to suburban women and pushes Biden smears

Donald Trump implored suburban women to “please like me” at his latest campaign rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and continued to deride his challenger Joe Biden, saying he “cannot imagine losing to a guy like this” and telling the crowd that the Scranton-born Democrat had “abandoned” them.

The president lied about the candidate’s intention to ban hydraulic fracturing at the expense of thousands of local jobs and told them: “If Biden Wins, China Wins. When WE Win, YOU WIN, Pennsylvania WINS, and America WINS!”

Trump also encouraged his loyalist audience in attacks on the media, beaming as its members chanted “CNN sucks!” and stoked more culture wars controversy by saying of recent Black Lives Matter demonstrations against divisive statues: “Are there any Italians in the room? Well we are protecting the legacy of Christopher Columbus. You know the Italians are tough, I love the Italians.”
