Former attorney slams Trump for pardoning war criminals

President Trump has released a campaign-style video despite it being months after the election and then backed a call by Senator Bernie Sanders to filibuster the Senate if a vote is not held on the Covid-19 stimulus bill passed by the House of Representatives.

Mr Sanders said he would “object” until there was a vote on legislation to provide a $2,000 payment to Americans. Mr Trump, a supporter of higher Covid payments, tweeted in praise of his plans saying: “Give the people $2000, not $600. They have suffered enough!”

It comes as Joe Biden has warned of the “massive damage” being done to national security because of officials’ putting up “roadblocks” for his transition team.

Mr Biden said: “Right now we just aren’t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas. It’s nothing short, in my view, of irresponsibility.”

Trump backs Sanders filibuster threat

President Trump today tweeted his support for Democrat Bernie Sanders threat to filibuster the Senate’s vote to overturn Trump’s veto of the Defence Bill unless a vote was agreed to increase Covid-19 payments to Americans.

Mr Trump has been a vocal supporter of increasing the amount from $600 to $2000, but this stance has put him at odds with fellow Republicans who want to limit spending.

On Twitter Mr Trump said: “Give the people $2000, not $600. They have suffered enough!”

US cuts military aid to El Salvador amid intense lobbying

The U.S. is slashing foreign military aid to El Salvador despite staunchly pro-American President Nayib Bukele’s intense lobbying in Washington to counter criticism he has taken his country down an authoritarian path.

Tucked into the omnibus spending bill signed Sunday by President Donald Trump was a provision barring access for El Salvador — as well as for neighbors Guatemala and Honduras — to a State Department program that finances the purchase of U.S. defense equipment.

The ban is part of an initiative by House Democrats to strengthen anti-corruption efforts in Central America.

Fate of Trump’s $2,000 checks now rests with GOP-led Senate

President Donald Trump’s push for $2,000 COVID-19 relief checks now rests with the Senate after the House voted overwhelmingly to meet the president’s demand to increase the $600 stipends, but Republicans have shown little interest in boosting spending.

The outcome is highly uncertain heading into Tuesday’s session. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has declined to publicly address how he plans to handle the issue.

But Democrats sharing a rare priority with Trump, have seized on the opportunity to force Republicans into a difficult vote of either backing or defying the outgoing president.

‘Trump was largely responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans who did not need to die’

Presidential historian Michael Beschloss has given a withering assessment of Donald Trump’s leadership.

Mr Beschloss discussed Mr Trump’s legacy on MSNBC with host Mehdi Hasan and was not complimentary about the 45th president’s achievements.

He said: “Donald Trump is not going to change the record. He was largely responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans who did not need to die. Millions of others who suffered from Covid did not need to suffer.”

Mr Hasan also asked if Mr Trump makes Herbert Hoover – often considered one of the worst US presidents – look like Mother Teresa.

Mr Beschloss responded that Hoover was personally a “very compassionate person” and that the best presidents – such as Abraham Lincoln – have shown empathy.

He added: “When you’ve got a president who has no empathy, who has no compassion, you see a spectacle like we’ve seen this week.”
