Trump at CPAC live: Latest updates as ex-president to give speech

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) enters its fourth day on Sunday with attendees gearing up for the culmination when it is rumoured Donald Trump will announce a 2024 presidential run.

Described as “Woodstock for election liars” by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, Joe Biden has said he will not be paying attention to the gathering in Orlando, Florida.

The former president will give his first speech since leaving office later with attention turned to whether he will use CPAC as the launchpad for a third presidential bid.

Biden team reportedly preparing economic package beyond Covid relief bill

President Joe Biden and lawmakers are reportedly working on a broader economic package that will look beyond the $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill in an effort to provide a boost to the country’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

According to the Associated Press, Biden and his team have already started discussing what the infrastructure package could look like with members of Congress, with Texas’ recent difficulties with power outages and water shortages following a brutal storm sparking further discussion around the need for infrastructure spending. Gina McCarthy, Biden’s national climate adviser, told AP that the deadly winter storm should serve as a “wake-up call” to the need for major changes.

The press agency said a proposal for the economic package could come as soon as next month.

As AP noted, it is likely that the plan will face some resistance from Republicans, particularly given the cost such sweeping infrastructure changes would be likely to come with.

Controversial CPAC speaker honoured with Ronald Reagan award

Scott Presler, a controversial speaker at CPAC this weekend, was honoured with a Ronald Reagan award at the GOP event on Saturday, despite calls for his removal from the event’s agenda.

In the days ahead of the conservative conference, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) had called on CPAC organizers to remove Mr Presler from the speaking line-up over his past involvement with “ACT for America”, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has branded an “anti-Muslim hate group” for pushing “wild anti-Muslim conspiracy theories”.

Despite calls for his removal, Mr Presler was honoured with the Ronald Reagan award, which is given out by the private Ronald Regan Presidential Foundation.

In a tweet on Saturday, Mr Presler said receiving the award was the “coolest gosh darn moment of my life”.

“None of this would have been possible without you,” he appeared to write to his followers.

“Mom & dad are here at my table and I couldn’t be a more proud son,” he said.

MeidasTouch trolls GOP with projection outside CPAC venue linking party to QAnon

Progressive PAC MeidasTouch has put up a projection outside the venue where the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is taking place in Florida appearing to link the GOP to QAnon.

Posting a photo of the projection, which shows the GOP’s logo, but with the “O” replaced with the “Q” icon that has come to represent QAnon, to Twitter MeidasTouch said it had undertaken the initiative in response to calls to hold Republicans “accountable”.

“You asked us to hold everyone at CPAC accountable, so we currently have this projection up on their white nationalist convention,” the PAC said in a tweet, branding Republicans white nationalists.

The PAC asked supporters to make a financial contribution to its efforts, asserting that it was “less than $17K away from paying for all our humiliating efforts for the GQP at CPAC this weekend” as of early Sunday morning.

MeidasTouch was created by three siblings, Ben Meiselas, Brett Meiselas and Jordan Meiselas, during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Trump golden statue everyone is talking about was made in Mexico

The attention-grabbing golden statue of former president Donald Trump was made in Mexico, it has been revealed.

Artist and American ex-pat Tommy Zegan travelled with the sculpture from Rosarito, just south of Tijuana close to the US border, to CPAC in Florida.

Politico reported that Mr Zegan crafted the statue, which weighs more than 200lbs, over six months with the help of three others. He then took it to Tampa, Florida where it was painted in chrome, and from there he drove it to CPAC in Orlando.

GOP turmoil front and centre

In speeches throughout Saturday, the GOP turmoil was front and centre. Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, attacked Liz Cheney, the No 3 House Republican, who has faced backlash for her vote to impeach Trump for inciting the Capitol riot.  And as the programme was wrapping up, Mr Trump issued a statement endorsing Max Miller, a former staffer who has now launched a campaign challenging Ohio’s Anthony Gonzalez, another Republican who voted in favour of impeachment.  Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News Channel host and Donald Trump Jr’s girlfriend, offered a pointed message to those who stand in opposition to the former president. “We bid a farewell to the weak-kneed, the spineless and the cowards that are posing in DC pretending that they’re working for the people,” she said. “Let’s send them a pink slip straight from CPAC.”

What might Trump say at Sunday speech?

The former president has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office and losing his Twitter account.

But he will reportedly use his platform on Sunday for a “show of force”, according to Axios, reminding the GOP he is still in charge, expects to play kingmaker for the foreseeable future and is its “presumptive 2024 nominee”.

The ex-president is also expected to mount an attack on Joe Biden – just five weeks into the job – for destroying the country, with a particular focus on his successor’s approach to immigration reform, according to reports.

Trump 2024 bid?

Rumours abound that the former president may use his CPAC speech today to announce his candidacy for the 2024 election.

“Trump will be the nominee if he decides to run,” Rick Tyler, a conservative strategist, has said.

Mitch McConnell has said he will “absolutely” support Mr Trump if the former president wins the Republican nomination.

GOP reps skip Covid relief vote for CPAC

Several Republican lawmakers said they could not attend Congress on Friday to vote for the coronavirus stimulus package due to the pandemic, but were due to appear in-person at the conservative conference taking place in Orlando, Florida, this weekend.

According to CNN, the Republican lawmakers included those who were former US president Donald Trump’s closest allies – some of whom were scheduled to speak at this weekend’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Florida.

The group of twelve House Republicans said they were unable to attend a number of votes in the House of Representatives that day “due to the ongoing public health emergency”, in a written letter seen by CNN.
