Solo: A Star Wars Story star Alden Ehrenreich has revealed the circumstances under which he would agree to star in a sequel.

However, the actor, who played the role of Han Solo in the middlingly received 2018 action-adventure, noted that he “didn’t know anything” about Disney’s Star Wars plans.

The ending of Solo seemed to set up another outing for Ehrenreich’s Solo – a younger version of the beloved maverick played by Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars – with the unveiling of Darth Maul as a villain, and Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) ascending to a leadership position in his criminal syndicate.

It has been suggested that the lack of critical praise, as well as the unconventional summer release date – just half a year after the release of Episode VIII – The Last Jedi – were to blame for an underwhelming box office performance.

Speaking to Esquire, Ehrenreich said: “I think our movie was kind of the last of the conventional-era Star Wars movie release time.”

Asked whether he would return to the role, Ehrenreich insisted that “it depends on what it is”.“It depends on how it’s done,” he said. “It depends if it feels innate to the story.”

Describing his time during the film’s production, the Hail, Ceasar star said: “It was basically a three-year experience from pre-production to the release of the movie, and I just wanted to be a person, connect with people in my life, spend time and develop as a person outside of those worlds. And then you never know.”

While another Solo movie is still unconfirmed, Disney have already greenlit a host of other Star Wars projects. The second season of the bounty hunter thriller The Mandalorian is set to arrive on Disney+ later this year.

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has been hired to co-write and direct a new film set in the Star Wars universe. An Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries is also in the works, along with another series from Russian Doll‘s Leslye Headland.
