Sony is being lampooned for the collective name its chosen for its Marvel films.

The studio owns the rights to release Spider-Man films, as well as spin-off films focused on characters from the web-slinger’s comic books, and has now announced the name for its series fo films.

While Disney has the Marvel Cinematic Universe – now commonly referred to as the MCU – Sony now has the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, otherwise known as SPUMC.

This means that Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom and the forthcoming Morbius film are all part of the SPUMC.


The announcement came via IGN and film fans reacted accordingly.

Another film to be part of the SPUMC is the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: into the Spider-Verse.

A sequel to Venom, titled Let There Be Carnage, will arrive in 2021.

Lead star Tom Hardy recently fuelled speculation of a cameo from Tom Holland’s Peter Parker after deleting an Instagram post showing a poster of the two characters.

Meanwhile, Marvel’s third Spider-Man film, which was scheduled to begin production this summer, has been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
