Sinead O’Connor has announced she will begin her training as a healthcare professional “in a few weeks”.

O’Connor, who also goes by Shushada Sadaqat following her conversion to Islam in 2018, shared the news with her followers on Twitter on Tuesday (1 September).

The Irish singer tweeted, “Very excited to be starting college in a few weeks.” She added that she will be completing a Fetac Level 5 healthcare support course.

O’Connor clarified that her new studies will not interrupt her career, stating, “Am still gonna be a singer but am gonna work as a healthcare assistant when I’m between albums and tours.”

The singer previously divulged her plans to train as a healthcare worker in May this year. Appearing on the Irish TV show The Late Late Show, she said she had been accepted onto a new college programme.

The acclaimed musician told host Ryan Tubridy, “I’ve been accepted onto the course to start in Bray Institute of Further Education in September.” She also revealed that she wants to focus on hospice care, and work as a “companion”.

O’Connor has a number of shows scheduled for 2021 across the US and Europe.

The singer, who rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra, recently criticised anti-mask protestors in Dublin.

She tweeted, “Can I please ask that selfishly unmasked crowds protesting and ignoring Covid protective restrictions not use my music as if to suggest I support you in any way. I do not.”
