Joker has been nominated for 11 Oscars – meaning it could match the record number of wins achieved by Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
The comic book film is in the running for Best Picture, with nods also for director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix in the Best Actor category.
Joker has strong competition in the form of The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which were handed 10 nominations each.
Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story and Parasite – the first South Korean film to be nominated for Best Picture – managed six each.
Actors who picked up their first ever nominations included Scarlett Johansson (Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit and Best Actress for Marriage Story), Cynthia Erivo (Best Actress for Harriet), Antonio Banderas (Best Actor for Pain & Glory), Florence Pugh (Best Supporting Actress for Little Women) and Bong Joon-ho (Best Director for Parasite).
Brad Pitt is tipped to win his first ever Oscar for the role of Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Key snubs included Jennifer Lopez for her role in Hustlers, Awkwafina for The Farewell and Little Women filmmaker Greta Gerwig.
Robert De Niro, Taron Egerton and Adam Sandler also failed to secure nominations for their roles in The Irishman, Rocketman and Uncut Gems, respectively.
The Academy has received criticism for failing to nominate any women in the best director category.
