Gina Carano: Fans mock #CancelDisneyPlus trend amid actor’s controversy

On Wednesday (10 February), Lucasfilm announced that Carano would no longer be appearing on The Mandalorian, after she shared a post on social media comparing being a Republican today to the experience of Jewish people during the Holocaust.

A spokesperson for the studio said that Carano was not currently employed by Lucasfilm with “no plans for her to be in the future”, adding: “Her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Carano’s dismissal led fans of the actor – a vocal Trump supporter – to call for a boycott of Disney’s streaming service using the hashtag #CancelDisneyPlus.

However, the request was largely mocked online, with one Twitter user commenting: “90 per cent of the tweets in the #CancelDisneyPlus tag are laughing at the people who are serious about it. Anyway, can’t wait to see WandaVision trend on Friday.”

“Uhhhhhhh no I don’t think that I will #CancelDisneyPlus,” one tweet read.

“Hopefully my Disney+ won’t glitch as much w/ less subscribers,” another commenter wrote, while another mocked the protestors, writing: “‘I hate cancel culture so let’s #CancelDisneyPlus’.”

“Saw #CancelDisneyPlus trending… checks the reason why… yup, I’m keeping my subscription,” another tweet read.

Carano’s original post read: “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbours… even by children… Because history is edited, most people today don’t realise that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbours hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

Carano, who played the recurring character Cara Dune on the Star Wars series, deleted the post. However, it was widely shared online and spurred the #FireGinaCarano hashtag to trend.
