Tennant, 49, and Davison, 69, will both return as the character for a new audio special set to bring back past incarnations of the Time Lord over the coming year.

Titled Out of Time: The Gates of Hell, the spin-off will pit the pair against classic Doctor Who villains, the Cybermen.

Their meeting, in what is branded “a collision of two timelines”, sparks ”a temporal catastrophe” that “grants the Cybermen dominion over the Earth”.

The special’s synopsis reads: “The Doctors must travel back in time to find the source of the Cyber-invasion and close the Gates of Hell.”

Davison played the Time Lord from 1981-82 while Tennant led the series from 2005-10.

It was recently reported that Jodie Whittaker would be quitting the role following the conclusion of her next series.

Out of Time: The Gates of Hell will be released in June 2021.
