“Cristina now has Covid. She is now positive. And it just breaks my heart,” the CNN host told his brother on Wednesday night. “It’s the one thing I was hoping wouldn’t happen. And now it has.”
The Cuomo Prime Time host added that the situation “sucks” because he cannot “help her as she helped me”. On Twitter, he said that he “Can’t wait to shake this fever so I can [help her].”
“This is what families are dealing with”, said Governor Cuomo to his brother during the CNN programme on Wednesday night. “You’re communicating to Americans what this is like.”
The New York governor continued: “One person gets the virus, other people in the home get the virus. You now have mother and a father with the virus. You have three kids you have to take care of. This gets complicated very fast so there is a reality to this.”
The CNN host had quarantined in a basement whilst his wife, Cristina Cuomo, and three children used the upstairs of their home.
Mr Cuomo announced that he had tested positive for the virus around two weeks ago and has continued to anchor his daily CNN programme.
He had described his symptoms to have included chills, fever and shortness of breath. Meanwhile his wife was said to be “not upset” at the diagnosis, with mild symptoms including a loss of smell and taste.
On 31 March, Mr Cuomo had said on Twitter: “I just hope I didn’t give it to the kids and Cristina, that would make me feel worse than this illness!”
He said on Wednesday that his children were healthy and had “stepped up” to help whilst their parents recover from the virus.
The announcement comes after Mr Cuomo admitted during a radio interview on Monday that he has reconsidered his career during the coronavirus lockdown. “I don’t like what I do professionally, I’ve decided,” said Mr Cuomo. “I don’t value indulging irrationality and hyperpartisanship. I don’t think it’s worth my time.”
The CNN host later commented that he “never meant” to say he disliked his job , but derided people who “are so intent on believing what they want to believe for political advantage.”
