Britney Spears appeared to indirectly comment on the new FX-Hulu documentary about her, Framing Britney Spears, which explores her rise to fame, her problematic treatment by the media, and the growing #FreeBritney movement.

In posts on Instagram and Twitter on Tuesday (9 February), Spears shared a performance of hers from a few years ago, writing, “I’ll always love being on stage …. but I am taking the time to learn and be a normal person ….. I love simply enjoying the basics of every day life!!!!”

She added: “Each person has their story and their take on other people’s stories !!!! We all have so many different bright beautiful lives !!! Remember, no matter what we think we know about a person’s life, it is nothing compared to the actual person living behind the lens !!!!”

A number of fans and fellow performers have had strong reactions to the documentary, which premiered on 6 February and is produced by The New York Times.

Paramore singer and solo artist Hayley Williams said that the ongoing debate around mental health awareness would not have happened without the scrutiny that Spears underwent in 2008.

“The Framing Britney Spears doc holy f***. No artist today would have to endure the literal torture that media/society/utter misogynists inflicted upon her,” Williams tweeted.

“The mental health awareness conversation, culturally, could never be where it is without the awful price she has paid.”

Spears’s assets have been under the control of her father, Jamie Spears, since 2008, when she was put on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold and had visitation rights to her children suspended.

Under the conservatorship, which Spears is currently attempting to negotiate in court, Jamie Spears and a financial fiduciary have the legal right to oversee and make decisions regarding the singer’s finances, health, business arrangements, and personal affairs.

Framing Britney Spears is available to watch now on FX in the US. A UK release date has not been announced.
