Murphy appears to claim that the subtitle of Black Panther‘s sequel will have seven letters in a tweet where he typed out space marks after the film’s title, and now comic book fans have been looking back over all arcs involving the movie’s main character, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), for hints at what it could be.
While some note that Murphy might have chosen a random number of spaces, others believe the number seven was intentional – and have come up with some contenders, one of which teases the potential arrival of the Fantastic Four into the MCU.
One arc that’s been highlighted is 2010’s Doomwar, which sees the villain Doctor Doom attempting to overthrow T’Challa’s family to become the ruler of Wakanda. This could be one way of introducing the Fantastic Four, who will be getting a standalone film at an unspecified time in the future.
Another villain the title could be referring to refuels speculation over a particular plot point in the new film. Following a seemingly throwaway line from Avengers: Endgame spoken by Okoye (Danai Gurira), fans predicted the arrival of Namor, the Sub-Mariner.
In Endgame, when we see Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) host a hologram meeting with several characters, Okoye briefly mentions that there’s been an underwater earthquake off the coast of Africa and, when Natasha asks her how Wakanda will deal with the incident, she simply says they were going to avoid it.
This meant nothing to casual fans, although some have been questioning whether this revealed the existence of Namor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Theorists have suggested that, if Namor’s involved in the film, the subtitle could be either “Mariner”, “Invader” or even“Drowned”, considering he attempts to sink Wakanda to the bottom of the ocean.
Black Panther 2 will be released on 6 May, 2022.
