Biden says he’s ‘tired’ of talking about Trump

Joe Biden says he is “done” talking about Donald Trump. The president told a CNN town hall event: “For four years all that has been in the news is Trump. The next four years I want to make sure that all the news is about the American people.”

Mr Biden also echoed former presidents when he described the White House as a “gilded cage” and said he was “self-conscious” about how attentively he is catered to there.

Other topics the new president was asked about include the idea of “defunding the police” and China’s human rights record, on which he said Beijing would face “repercussions”.

Former president Donald Trump seems to have distanced himself from his longtime lawyer Rudy Giuliani after the collapse of his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, writes Shweta Sharma.

Mr Trump’s senior adviser and spokesperson Jason Miller told CNN that the former New York mayor is “not currently representing President Trump in any legal matters”.

In a further tweet, Mr Miller said there are “no pending cases” where Mr Giuliani is representing the former president, while maintaining that Mr Giuliani remains “an ally and friend”.

Biden calls white supremacists ‘demented’

Joe Biden on Tuesday night said that those who promoted white supremacist views were “demented” and “dangerous” people.

Mr Biden was responding to a question on how he would deal with the threat posed by white supremacy in the country, including those who participated in the insurrection at the US Capitol on 6 January.

Calling them the greatest threat in terms of domestic terrorism in the US, he said at CNN’s town hall that the problem of white supremacy in America “is complex, it is wide-ranging and it is real”.

Nato chief urges defence ministers to cough up more cash

Four years of tirades from Donald Trump may have left their mark on Nato.

In an effort to improve “burden sharing” – the way the 30 member countries contribute money, military hardware and troops to operations run by the world’s biggest security alliance – Jens Stoltenberg is proposing they jointly fund more of Nato’s work.

Mr Trump repeatedly claimed Nato members were taking advantage of the US by failing to contribute enough funding to the organisation, and warned Washington would not stand for it.

Now Mr Stoltenberg, the secretary-general, has said he will urge defence ministers at a two-day videoconference starting Wednesday “to increase Nato’s funding for our core deterrence and defense activities”.

The plan would mean jointly funding battlegroups of troops on standby in member countries bordering Russia, aerial policing operations, the deployment of warships on permanent maritime duties or military exercises. It would not be used for active military operations outside Nato territory.

At the moment, Mr Stoltenberg told reporters ahead of the meeting, “the country that provides the capabilities also provides the funding. So, if you send some troops to the Nato battlegroup in Lithuania, as Norway does, then Norway pays for that. I think that we should change that.”

Biden optimistic about progress on Covid-19 by Christmas

Joe Biden hopes to be able to ease off on Covid-19 restrictions on public life by the end of the year, he told a CNN town hall event.

Vaccines will help push the US toward herd immunity, he suggested.

He said: “If that works that way, as my mother would say, with the grace of God and the good will of the neighbors, that by next Christmas I think we’ll be in a very different circumstance, God willing, than we are today.

“A year from now, I think that there’ll be significantly fewer people having to be socially distanced, have to wear masks, et cetera,” he continued. “But we don’t know. So I don’t want to overpromise anything here. I told you when I ran and when I got elected, I will always level with you.”
