Donald Trump has issued a statement praising a sweeping elections bill signed into law by Republicans in Georgia – introducing tough new voting restrictions – that has otherwise provoked an outcry and which Joe Biden called “Jim Crow in the 21st Century”, “un-American” and “an atrocity,” saying his Justice Department will be “taking a look”.

Fellow Republican populist Ted Cruz has meanwhile been rebuked for his midnight appearance at the Rio Grande attempting to stoke controversy over the immigration crisis at the US-Mexico border, with Democratic activist Beto O’Rourke accusing him of engaging in “cosplay”.

Elsewhere, Mr Biden has invited both Russia and China to return to global climate crisis talks, hoping to bolster international cooperation on the issue and unite the superpowers despite recently attacking both Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

Michigan Republican Party chair calls top Democratic women ‘witches’

Local wit Ron Weiser made the remark mocking state governor Gretchen Whitmer, attorney general Dana Nessel and secretary of state Jocelyn Benson during a filmed GOP meeting and was first dobbed in by The Detroit News.

Weiser said repeatedly that his party is focused on defeating “three witches”, who are up for reelection in 2022, and added: “Our job now is to soften up those three witches and make sure that when we have good candidates to run against them that they are ready for the burning at the stake. Maybe the press heard that, too.”

Governor Whitmer noted that she had been the target of a kidnapping plot by anti-government extremists in 2020 over opposition to the state’s pandemic lockdown in her response.

“Given the dramatic increase in death threats against Michigan elected officials during the Trump Administration, this type of rhetoric is destructive and downright dangerous,” she said.

“It’s time for people of goodwill on both sides of the aisle to bring down the heat and reject this kind of divisive rhetoric.”

Bernie Sanders rallies Amazon workers in Alabama ahead of union vote

Also taking on the retail behemoth was Warren’s fellow progressive from Vermont, who travelled to Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday to rally Amazon workers organising what could be the first-ever labour union in the company’s history.

“You’re prepared to stand up and say that every worker in this country deserves to have decent wages, decent working conditions, decent benefits, and to be treated with dignity, not as a robot,” Sanders said.

Roughly 5,800 workers at Amazon’s sorting facility in Bessemer, Alabama, are participating in a high-stakes vote to determine their membership with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. Voting ends on 29 March.

“What you are doing requires an enormous amount of courage, and what you’re doing is not only for yourselves and your kids and your families – what you are doing is for workers all across this country,” the senator added.

Amazon hits out at Elizabeth Warren after she bashes retail giant on taxes

The progressive senator for Massachusetts attacked the online retail giant on Twitter by tweeting a clip of herself speaking at a Senate Finance Committee and saying the corporation chose to “exploit loopholes and tax havens to pay close to nothing in taxes”.

“You make the tax laws Senator Warren; we just follow them,” Amazon responded in a rather huffy series of tweets.

“If you don’t like the laws you’ve created, by all means, change them.”

Beto O’Rourke rebukes Ted Cruz over Rio Grande stunt: ‘The only threat you face is unarmed children and families’

The Texas Democrat and activist has hit out at the man who narrowly beat him in the 2018 midterm senate race over his attempt at “crisis cosplay” over the immigration crisis at the US-Mexico border.

Cruz made a midnight visit to the banks of the big river this week, where he claimed he was able to spot three “people smugglers” on the other side even though it was utterly dark.

O’Rourke was infuriated by his antics and made himself admirably clear:

Here’s Andrew Buncombe on Cruz’s shenanigans.

Georgia governor hits back at Biden as Clinton, Warnock and Abrams voice disgust

Under fire Peach State leader Brian Kemp has issued a statement to The Hill rubbishing Biden’s remarks on Georgia’s new voting restrictions.

“There is nothing ‘Jim Crow’ about requiring a photo or state-issued ID to vote by absentee ballot – every Georgia voter must already do so when voting in-person,” he said.

“President Biden, the left, and the national media are determined to destroy the sanctity and security of the ballot box,” he went on, claiming it was “obvious” that the president and his White House aides have not actually read the wording of the new law.

“As secretary of state, I consistently led the fight to protect Georgia elections against power-hungry, partisan activists,” Kemp insisted.

“As governor, I won’t back down from keeping Georgia elections secure, accessible, and fair.”

Which is all very well, but Biden isn’t the only high-profile Democrat not convinced…

President invites China and Russia to join next climate talks

Biden has invited Beijing and Moscow to return to global climate crisis talks, hoping to bolster international cooperation on the issue and unite the superpowers.

It’s a necessary move but one that comes right on the heels of the new president being overtly critical of counterparts Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, taking the former to task over democratic principles and the persecution of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang and labeling the latter “a killer” over the apparent Kremlin-sponsored poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
