Biden news live: Latest updates as president bars Trump from intelligence briefings

Biden says Trump shouldn’t get intelligence briefings due to ‘erratic behavior’

In comments that will be sure to anger Mr Trump’s ardent supporters, Mr Biden said there was no benefit to the former president receiving them and that he may even let “slip” classified or sensitive information.

“I just think that there is no need for him to have the intelligence briefings. What value is giving him an intelligence briefing?” Mr Biden told CBS News. He added: “What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”

It came as Mr Trump made his belated return to social media, following his purge by Silicon Valley’s tech giants over his role in inciting supporters to invade the US Capitol.

The former president posted on Gab for the first time since January 8, uploading his lawyer’s negative response to demands Mr Trump testify at his second impeachment hearing next week.

Trump ally Lou Dobbs cancelled by Fox Business

Fox Business Network’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight”, whose host has trumpeted unfounded assertions of voter fraud in the 2020 election, has been abruptly canceled. In a statement on Friday, Fox News said the move was part of routine programming alterations that it had foreshadowed in an announcement last fall. Fox News “regularly considers programming changes and plans have been in place to launch new formats as appropriate post-election, including on Fox Business — this is part of those planned changes,” the company said.

Mr Dobbs, who was perhaps Donald Trump’s closest ally among far right media figures, responded on Twitter by retweeting criticism of the decision by Fox.

In a statement, Mr Trump said: “Lou Dobbs is and was great. Nobody loves America more than Lou. He had a large and loyal following that will be watching closely for his next move, and that following includes me.”

Biden says Trump should no longer receive intelligence briefings

Joe Biden has said that Donald Trump should no longer receive intelligence briefings, citing his “erratic behaviour” unrelated to the storming of the US Capitol.

In comments that will be sure to trigger intense controversy among Republicans and Mr Trump’s supporters, Mr Biden said there was no benefit to him receiving them, and that he may even let “slip” classified or sensitive information.

In an interview with CBS News, due to be broadcast over the weekend, Mr Biden said he would “rather not speculate out loud”, when asked what he feared could happen if Mr Trump continued to receive the briefings.
