Joe Biden has hired an all-female senior communications team for his administration, including naming veteran Democratic spokeswoman Jen Psaki as his White House press secretary.

Ms Psaki will be one of seven women to fill the upper ranks of Mr Biden’s communications team, making it the first of its kind where all top aides tasked with speaking for a presidential administration will be female.

“Honored to work again for @JoeBiden, a man I worked on behalf of during the Obama-Biden Admin as he helped lead economic recovery, rebuilt our relationships with partners (turns out good practice) and injected empathy and humanity into nearly every meeting I sat in,” Ms Psaki tweeted on Sunday following the announcement.

Mr Biden’s press team will be led by Kate Bedingfield, who has worked as the president-elect’s campaign communications manager. She will retain the same title under the Biden administration.

“I’m unspeakably proud to have the opportunity to serve as White House Communications Director for @joebiden,” Ms Bedingfield said in a tweet. “Working for him as VP and on this campaign gave me insight into what kind of capable, compassionate, clear-eyed president he will be and it will be a profound honor to be one small part of his work. It will also be an honor to work alongside the incredible women who are taking on these roles together.”

Previously, the White House communications team has largely been dominated by male voices, like most other aspects of the West Wing.

The decision to create the first all-female senior communications staff could be another way Mr Biden’s has decided to show the public his commitment to diversity within his administration.

“Communicating directly and truthfully to the American people is one of the most important duties of a President, and this team will be entrusted with the tremendous responsibility of connecting the American people to the White House,” Mr Biden said in a statement.

“These qualified, experienced communicators bring diverse perspectives to their work and a shared commitment to building this country back better,” he added.

The other members of the communications team include Karine Jean Pierre, a campaign adviser who will work as principal deputy press secretary, and Pili Tobar, who will become deputy White House communications director. Ms Tobar was a former staffer of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Then Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will have Ashley Etienne, a senior adviser to the Biden campaign, as her communications director in the White House. Symone Sanders, a senior adviser to Biden’s campaign, will act as the chief spokeswoman for the vice president-elect.

“Our country is facing unprecedented challenges — from the coronavirus pandemic to the economic crisis, to the climate crisis, and a long-overdue reckoning over racial injustice,” Ms Harris said in a statement. “To overcome these challenges, we need to communicate clearly, honestly, and transparently with the American people, and this experienced, talented, and barrier-shattering team will help us do that.”

In the East Wing, Dr Jill Biden’s communication director will be Elizabeth Alexander, a former campaign adviser and Washington lawyer.
