Drake lands ninth album number one, tying him with Madonna and the Rolling Stones

Drake has landed his ninth number one album in the US, with his surprise compilation Care Package helping him match artists including Madonna and the Rolling Stones for most number one albums in history.

The album, comprised of a number of previously unreleased songs from Drake’s back catalogue, moved 109,000 equivalent units, of which 16,000 were in pure sales.

This means that he is now one of five artists to land nine albums at the top of the US Billboard 200 Album Chart, tying him with Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Eminem and Garth Brooks.

He still requires significant levels of future success to overtake his nearest rivals, however. Elvis Presley had 10 number ones, Barbra Streisand and Bruce Springsteen have 11, Jay-Z has 14 and The Beatles had 19.

Earlier this year, Drake overtook The Beatles as the artist with the second most ever tracks on the Billboard Top 100 singles chart, with 35 in total. Only Madonna, with 38 tracks, stands above him.

It was revealed late last week that Drake had a new tattoo inked on his arm to mark the occasion, one that spoofs the famous shot of the Beatles walking across Abbey Road and depicts Drake waving at the band as he passes them by.
